Vitalant's research donation program is another way to be part of something bigger than yourself. As a leader in the blood banking industry Vitalant works closely with several different companies and organizations on a wide range of research studies and provides support to area hospitals in need of blood and blood products for research purposes.
Collaborative research partnerships give Vitalant the opportunity to transform lives in a different way. We are proud to be part of scientific advancements in transfusion medicine and the biomedical field by offering our services and expertise in clinical trials, hospital-initiated studies and specialty contract research services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.
Many of these research projects are focused on continually improving blood transfusions for patients, in addition to enhancing the donor experience.
Who can make a research donation?
Nearly anyone can donate for research purposes. Often, donors who are not currently eligible to donate blood to the community blood supply for the following reasons donate for research purposes:
- received a tattoo or piercing in a non-FDA approved location
- traveled to a currently deferred area (includes travel to areas with high malaria risk, high Zika risk and military travel to many European countries from 1980 through 1990)
- engaged in male to male sexual contact in the past 12 months
Donating blood for research is an important way you can continue to contribute during your deferral period. Financial compensation may be provided for your time and travel.
Please note, although we appreciate all potential research donors, due to community needs, O-negative donors who are eligible for a community blood supply donation are not eligible for research donations.
Where can I make a research donation?
Research donations are accepted at select Vitalant locations in Denver and San Francisco. Call us at 303.363.2202 or email us if you are interested in participating.
