FAQs

Am I eligible to donate blood?

The majority of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood, but only about 3% actually do. Find out if you're eligible.

 

Is donating blood safe?

Donating blood is safe. Sterile, disposable needles and supplies are used once and then properly disposed. You cannot contract any infectious disease by donating blood.

How long does it take to donate whole blood?

It takes about an hour from completing the health history questionnaire through the medical screening and post-donation refreshments and snacks. The donation itself only takes about 10 minutes.

 

*Donors who donate with Vitalant for the first time and present to give whole blood, Power Red, platelets or plasma at a Vitalant donation center during the promotional time frame (Sept. 1, 2026-Dec. 31, 2027), are eligible and will receivem points ONLY if they’ve first created an online donor account AND opted in to the Donor Rewards program AND used the promotion code when scheduling. Donors who have an unsuccessful donation will receive regular donation points and bonus points only if they have a scheduled appointment. Offer is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. Offer is subject to change at any time during the promotional time frame. Approximately 7-14 days after donation, enough bonus points will be added to the donor’s account to redeem for a total of $50 in electronic gift cards of choice in the online Donor Rewards store. Bonus points are in addition to regular donation points earned. To receive a total of $100 via Donor Rewards, the donor must use promo code DONORNEW-5050-V for their first donation and promo code 2NDVISIT-5050-V for their second donation that must be made within 6 months of the previous donation. Physical gift cards will NOT be handed out at the blood donation location, nor will a redemption email be sent. Some donors may qualify for an additional promotion during this same time.
