  3. Donor care specialist will review results and determine the best way for you to donate.

  4. Relax while your specialist prepares materials and equipment.

  5. Specialist will clean an area on your arm and insert a sterile needle to begin.

  6. Samples of your blood will be collected for testing.

  7. You will then complete the whole blood donation process, which can take up to 15 minutes (usually 1O).

Important information:

  • Physical gift card will NOT be handed out at the blood donation location.
  • Donors must use promo code AUGUST15-2026-V when scheduling their Aug. 1-31 appointment (or a staff member can add it for them) PRIOR to their donation to receive bonus points for the $15 gift card. Donor Rewards program opt-in is required.
  • Donors must have a valid email address in their Vitalant donor record.
  • While most bonus points for the gift card will appear in donor accounts about a week after donation, it could take an additional week for them to be loaded and available to redeem in the online donor store.
  • Donors must log in to their donor accounts to access the online donor store to redeem their points for the gift card.
  • Some donors may qualify for additional promotions during this same time frame.
 

FAQs

Am I eligible to donate blood?
The majority of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood, but only about 3% actually do. Find out if you're eligible.
Is donating blood safe?
Donating blood is safe. Sterile, disposable needles and supplies are used once and then properly disposed. You cannot contract any infectious disease by donating blood.
How long does it take to donate whole blood?
It takes about an hour from completing the health history questionnaire through the medical screening and post-donation refreshments and snacks. The donation itself only takes about 10 minutes.
What happens to my blood after donation?
Following your donation, your transformative gift is typed, tested, processed, stored and distributed to patients who need it in the hospitals we serve. You’ll feel proud knowing you’ve saved up to three lives. When you do good for others, you do good for yourself!

*Presenting donors who come to donate whole blood, Power Red, platelets or plasma with Vitalant during the promotional time frame (Aug. 1-31, 2026) and use code AUGUST15-2026-V when scheduling are eligible and will receive points ONLY if they’ve first created an online donor account AND opted in to the Donor Rewards program. Donors who have an unsuccessful donation will receive regular donation points and bonus points only if they have a scheduled appointment using this code. Offer is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. Offer is subject to change at any time during the promotional time frame. Approximately 7-14 days after donation, enough bonus points will be added to the donor’s account to redeem for a $15 electronic gift card of choice in the online Donor Rewards program. Bonus points are in addition to regular donation points earned. Physical gift card will NOT be handed out at the blood donation location nor will a redemption email be sent. Some donors may qualify for an additional promotion during this same time frame. A successful donation is NOT required to receive the promotional item.
