If you're donating blood for the first time, it's normal to have questions about what to expect. The good news is that the blood donation process is safe, simple and typically takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments.

What to Do Before You Donate Blood

Before you arrive on the day of your appointment, make sure you've eaten a healthy meal,focused on hydration and brought a valid form of identification. A healthy meal can help support your iron levels, and doing these three things can help ensure a positive donation experience.

Optionally, you can also complete the required health history questionnaire on the same day as your donation, any time after 12:01 a.m. Doing this ahead of time can save up to 20 minutes at your appointment. If you’re not able to, no worries. You’ll be asked to complete it during your appointment instead.

Your specialist will clean your arm and insert a sterile needle to collect blood, described as a brief pinching sensation.

Blood Samples Are Collected

A small sample of blood is collected for blood typing and infectious disease testing to help ensure safety before distribution.

Complete Your Blood Donation

Sit back, relax, and wait for your donation to be complete. The whole blood donation process typically takes 10-15 minutes.

Enjoy Refreshments and Recover

After donating, you'll spend a few minutes in the refreshment area enjoying snacks and drinks. This supports a positive recovery.

Once finished, you can return to most activities and feel proud knowing you may help save up to three lives.

How Long Does the Blood Donation Process Take?

Many first-time donors are surprised by how quick the process of donating blood can be.

While the actual blood donation usually takes about 10 minutes, the entire appointment, including registration, health screening, donation and refreshments, typically takes about one hour.
