What to Do Before You Donate Blood

Before you arrive on the day of your appointment, make sure you've eaten a healthy meal, focused on hydration and brought a valid form of identification. A healthy meal can help support your iron levels, and doing these three things can help ensure a positive donation experience.

Optionally, you can also complete the required health history questionnaire on the same day as your donation, any time after 12:01 a.m. Doing this ahead of time can save up to 20 minutes at your appointment. If you’re not able to, no worries. You’ll be asked to complete it during your appointment instead.

Once you arrive for your scheduled donation, you're ready to begin the process of giving blood!

How Long Does the Blood Donation Process Take?

Many first-time donors are surprised by how quick the process of donating blood can be.

While the actual blood donation usually takes about 10 minutes, the entire appointment, including registration, health screening, donation and refreshments, typically takes about one hour.

Different donation types, such as platelet donation or Power Red donations, may require additional time.

What Happens After Your Donation?

Your impact doesn't end when you leave the donation center. After donation, your blood is typed, tested, processed and prepared for distribution to patients in need as part of post-donation care and safety.

Most donors feel well after donating blood and can return to their normal routine the same day.

Before you leave, you'll enjoy refreshments to help replenish fluids and nutrients.

To support a smooth recovery, be sure to:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support hydration after donation
  • Eat a healthy meal or snack after your donation
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for the rest of the day
  • Follow any additional instructions provided by your donor care specialist
