In the time it takes you to read this, someone in the U.S. needs blood – EVERY TWO SECONDS of every day a patient receives a transfusion of blood or blood components (red blood cells, platelets, or plasma).
When you donate blood you give hope to hospital patients, their families and friends. You’re making sure a child doesn’t grow up without a parent, a husband doesn’t become a widower, or a young woman’s father can walk her down the aisle at her wedding.

Did you know that when you give blood, there are benefits for you, too? We conduct a pre-donation screening that ensures your safety and the safety of the blood supply for patients – and as a bonus, provides you with valuable health information:
As a first-time donor, you probably have some questions about the process, what to expect, how to prepare and what we mean by types of donation. At Vitalant, trained phlebotomists (blood draw specialists) will guide you through each step and ensure your comfort throughout the donation
Most first-time donors describe the needle insertion as a brief pinch or sting, similar to getting a vaccine. According to Michigan Medicine, there are relatively few nerve endings in the inner elbow area where blood is drawn, making it more a moment of discomfort than pain.
Wondering how you’ll feel after donating blood? After giving blood, most donors feel a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing they’ve helped save lives. Physically, you might feel completely normal, or you may experience mild fatigue or lightheadedness; both are common and temporary.
Staying hydrated and enjoying the snacks provided after your donation helps your body recover quickly. Most people return to their usual activities right away, but it’s best to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. If you feel tired, take it easy and rest. These feelings typically pass within a few hours, and many donors report feeling energized and motivated to donate again. Check out a few more post-donation tips here.
Giving blood is not only safe, it’s a rewarding experience that benefits your health and your community.
In general, you can donate blood if you:
Blood donation is not a “one and done” task. Blood is needed constantly and can only come from human donors, so the supply must be replenished every day. The good news is you can donate more than once in a year.
How frequently you can donate blood depends on the type of donation you give:
Whole blood donors can give every 56 days, up to 6 times in one year.
Power Red, or double red cell, donors can give every 112 days, up to 3 times a year.
Platelet donors can give every 7 days up to 24 times a year!
Plasma donors can give every 28 days up to 13 times a year.
Vitalant offers Donor Rewards for frequent donations, and you can become Vital Elite to enjoy more exclusive perks. How ever many times you donate, patients will be thankful for the hope and healing your blood donations provide.
