January is National Blood Donor Month
More than 55 years ago, on December 31, 1969, the president of the United States signed a proclamation designating January as National Blood Donor Month (NBDM). The new monthly observance was meant to honor voluntary blood donors and to encourage more people to give blood at a time when more blood is needed.

January is designated as National Blood Donor Month because, after the winter holidays and with the cold and flu season upon us, there is often a dip in blood collections even though blood donations are still critically needed. Blood drives also cancel due to inclement winter weather and given that every two seconds, a patient in the U.S. receives blood including newborn babies, cancer patients, trauma victims, the need is great. Give blood on Jan. 25 and help ensure that every patient has the blood they need. Because of you, life doesn't stop.
