New 28-day Deferral In Response to Novel Coronavirus
Vitalant – along with other blood banks – is monitoring the evolving situation regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, a new strain of a viral respiratory infection, which began in China. Vitalant is absolutely committed to safety for patients and donors. And, although the risk of contracting the virus is extremely low due to the government-regulated blood screening process, Vitalant is implementing certain measures.
Beginning immediately, we are recommending a 28-day self-deferral for donors who have within the last FOUR weeks:
- Traveled to/from China, or its special administrative regions of Hong Kong & Macau
Vitalant is actively monitoring the situation, in collaboration with the AABB, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other blood banks. And we will efficiently implement any necessary additional changes as new information emerges from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or our regulatory bodies.
