Thank-You Gifts Offered to Boost Blood Donations During Crucial Time

Blood donors are needed every day to ensure patients receive lifesaving blood transfusions, but it’s especially vital around the July 4 holiday week, when thousands fewer people are available to give. When a patient receives a transfusion, many describe an immediate transformation, like Melanie Rogers. She needed three units of blood after delivering her daughter prematurely.  

"I felt better and got more energy back as I received the blood," Rogers says. "It was like when your car runs out of gas and is just sputtering, then you fill it back up and it’s running just great."

Her daughter is now a mom herself, and Melanie’s grateful blood donors helped allow her to be a part of both her daughter's and grandchild’s lives.

Donations from donors of all blood types help patients, especially type O. Emergency room doctors typically reach for type O when seconds count, because it’s most compatible with other blood types.
