Do you remember your first blood donation? Was it at a blood drive? Blood drives are the way many people make their first blood donation. That’s because blood drives at work, school, houses of worship and community centers make it convenient for people to take that first step to becoming a lifelong blood donor. New donors are essential to safeguarding the national blood supply. Most blood donors give less than two times a year and less than three percent of the population gives blood. Because of these trends, Vitalant needs about 216,000 new donors every year to ensure patient needs are met.
In November 2021, Vitalant launched a three-month campaign for first-time donors on blood drives. In total, more than 27,000 new donors made their first blood donation during the campaign. Because volunteer blood drive coordinators play a vital role in our ability to engage new donors and collect blood, we hosted three monthly random drawings for coordinators and gave away 15 Amazon.com Gift Cards.
Join us in congratulating the winners and giving all our awesome volunteers a BIG round of applause!
