Super Senior Spotlight: Pat’s Dedication to Blood Donation and Volunteering
Since 2016, Pat has volunteered at least twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, ensuring donors feel welcomed and supported. His dedication extends beyond his scheduled days—he often drops by to tidy up and restock snacks, making sure everything is just right. As a retired high school Latin and English teacher, Pat thrives on conversation. If you walk into the center as a stranger, you’ll leave as a friend. His warm personality and enthusiasm for helping others make him a beloved figure among staff and donors alike.
Pat’s willingness to step in wherever he’s needed comes naturally. Growing up in a family of 10 children and serving in the Army instilled in him a strong sense of service. Whether it’s assisting at the front desk, helping in the canteen, or lending a hand with various tasks around the center, Pat is always ready to jump in. Need help with a project? An opinion on something? Pat is your go-to guy.
His incredible dedication even caught the attention of a local news segment, Super Seniors, which highlights inspiring senior citizens engaged in meaningful activities. Pat’s story is one of commitment, generosity, and a passion for making a difference.
Reflecting on his journey, Pat recalls how a staff member, Spring Schaak, first encouraged him to volunteer after one of his platelet donations. Though hesitant at first, he quickly realized how rewarding it was. Starting with just a few hours, he soon found himself increasing his time, inspired by the gratitude of both staff and donors. Over the years, his role expanded to include everything from filing paperwork and stocking supplies to decorating for holidays and handling errands.
“The blood bank personnel must have liked what I was doing because they even asked me to help on busier days and when staff were out,” Pat says. “I enjoy volunteering so much that they can’t get rid of me even if they wanted to!”
For Pat, volunteering is more than just a way to pass the time—it’s a meaningful way to give back. The Vitalant team in Billings has become like a second family to him, and he feels honored to work alongside such dedicated and caring individuals. His passion for service and unwavering commitment continue to inspire those around him, proving that one person truly can make a difference.
Thank you, Pat, for your years of service, generosity, and kindness. You are a true Super Senior and an invaluable part of the Vitalant family!
