January marks National Blood Donor Month, a time to recognize the lifesaving generosity of blood donors and celebrate the vital role you play in inspiring them to give. Since 1970, this month has been dedicated to raising awareness about the critical need for blood and honoring those who make lifesaving donations possible year after year.

The start of the new year often inspires people to set goals and make meaningful commitments. By reminding donors to begin 2026 with the simple yet powerful act of donating blood, you help them make a resolution that saves lives. Whether it’s a cancer patient needing platelets, a newborn in the NICU, or a trauma victim who arrives at the hospital unexpectedly, blood is often the difference between hope and heartbreak.

Your work as a coordinator ensures that patients never have to face those moments without the support of volunteer donors. You recruit, organize and encourage — often behind the scenes — yet the impact is front and center in every unit of blood that reaches a patient in need. Simply put, you are the driving force behind every successful blood drive. This January, we encourage you to use the momentum of National Blood Donor Month to:

  • Inspire donors to end the year strong with one more donation in 2025.

  • Remind them of the critical need for a steady blood supply, especially during winter months when weather, flu season and holiday travel often reduce the number of available donors.

  • Invite new donors to join the mission by giving for the first time or donate alongside a friend or family member to take their generosity even further.

Remind blood donors of the vital role they play:

  • Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

  • 1 in 7 hospitalized patients need blood.

  • If just 1% more Americans donated blood, shortages would be alleviated.

Share a donor or patient story in your workplace, school or community when promoting your blood drive. Real stories inspire action and remind people that their single donation has a very real impact.

As we celebrate National Blood Donor Month, there’s no better time to recognize the dedication and passion behind every drive you lead. On behalf of patients, their families and all of us at Vitalant, thank you for your unwavering dedication and the countless hours you give to support blood donation year-round. Your leadership makes lifesaving connections possible every day. Host your next blood drive soon and keep the extraordinary momentum alive.
