As a blood drive coordinator, you may receive questions about Vitalant’s new national donor recognition program that launched in January. The new program encourages donors to maximize their lifesaving efforts by giving the donation type that can best help patients based on their blood type and other attributes. The program focuses on platelet, power red and plasma donations. Reward points for whole blood donations are currently temporarily suspended due to the financial impact of the pandemic.

Participating donors will earn points based on donation type, redeemable for e-gift cards to national retailers and restaurants. Points don’t expire if donors attempt at least one donation within a rolling 15-month period. Donors also have the option to donate their points back to Vitalant to further support our lifesaving mission.

Donors must opt in to the new national program, if they haven’t already. Donors who were already in a regional recognition program and have come to donate within the last 15 months were automatically enrolled in the new program, and any active points earned under the previous programs were carried into the new program.

Donors in jeopardy of having their points expire because they have not come to donate in the last 15 months will receive an email, alerting them to schedule an appointment or use their points before they expire.
