Dancing Her Heart Out Despite a Serious Blood Disorder

Although Daniela, 12, was born with an inherited life-threatening blood disease called beta thalassemia, she hasn’t let this chronic disorder keep her from doing what she loves — like competitive dancing. Daniela-4_Brooke-Way.jpeg

This year, for her competitive solo dance, Daniela did an original piece called “Heal,” about her life attached to the IV pole. “It was very emotional to put together, and it was very emotional to watch her out there,” said her mom, Nicole. “To share your story with the world can sometimes be scary. But she did it with such class and grace.”

Daniela’s family has been sharing her story since she was little to encourage people to give blood, because she wouldn’t be here without donated blood. Beta thalassemia prevents bone marrow from producing enough healthy red blood cells. Daniela has a blood transfusion every three weeks and has had almost 200 transfusions to date.

“The reason I’m such a strong advocate is really because of Daniela. I mean, if people don’t donate blood, she would not be here,” Nicole said. “It’s actually scary to rely on the blood of strangers to save your child.”

It is one of the most important things anybody can do and it’s free."

And to current blood donors, Nicole said: “Thank you ... a million times over, thank you! Everybody who donates blood is our hero! Everyone who donates blood is saving our daughter’s life.

“You’re giving my child a future, a better life, giving her the chance to live her dreams. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We love you!”
