Being a blood donor is a meaningful act of kindness. You’ve taken the first big step by donating blood, something less than 3% of the population do. Congratulations and welcome to the Vitalant family!

As a new blood donor, you may have questions about your donation and what happens next. Here are a few things we thought you’d like to learn about. But if you ever have questions about your blood donation, feel free to email or call us.

What are some benefits to giving blood?

There are several benefits for Vitalant blood donors. The most fulfilling one is rather intangible. It’s the warm feeling you get knowing that you’ve helped someone in need. You’ll find out several more donor benefits below.

First-Time Donor Information

Pre-Donation Health Check
You may remember that prior to your actual blood donation, we checked your blood pressure, temperature, hemoglobin level, cholesterol level and more. The results of those tests are stored in your secure online donor account. To access them, you need to set up your account. No time like the present, right?

Every time you donate blood, we’ll check those health indicators and put the results in your account.
Rewards Program and Thank-You Gifts
Earn Points
We want to thank and recognize you for being a blood donor. Every blood donation earns points that you can redeem electronically for gift cards from well-known national retailers like Amazon.com, Target and Dominos. But to redeem your points, you must opt in to the Donor Rewards program from your online donor account you recently created.

A full explanation of the Donor Reward program is online.

Special Donation Gifts
In addition to the points you earn, Vitalant may offer a special gift from time to time for your blood donation. These gifts can be cool physical items like a T-shirt, hat or picnic cooler. Or they can be additional gift cards you earn for donating. (Some gift cards are exclusive donor gifts earned by using a specialty promo code included in emails, texts and other Vitalant communications. Make sure you’re opted in to receive these.) Other times, you’ll be automatically entered to win a large-scale prize like a multi-thousand-dollar gift card or even a new car.

To access most gifts, you’ll need to opt in to the Donor Rewards program from your donor account.
When Will I Learn My Blood Type?
Within two weeks of your blood donation, you should receive an email displaying your blood type. If you don’t receive an email within three weeks, please call us at 1-877-25-VITAL (258-4825).
Once you know your blood type, you may want to Power Up to a type of donation that maximizes your impact on patients.

Are There Other Ways I Can Support Vitalant’s Lifesaving Mission?

Being a regular blood donor is the most important way you can support Vitalant’s mission of providing safe blood components to the hospital patients who need them. But if you’d like to do more, there are a few things you might consider:

  • Become Vital Elite. It’s easy to join, and your commitment comes with extra support, recognition and rewards.
  • Share your story. Tell us why you became a blood donor, or how you feel after giving blood. You never know. It may inspire and motivate others to donate.
  • Social Media. Follow us and engage with others who, like you, are making a difference.
  • Multiply your impact by inviting others to donate. It’s more fun to give with others. Next time you donate, invite someone to make an appointment at the same time as yours. You may also use Vitalant’s Refer a Friend program. You and a brand-new donor you invite can each earn a $10 gift card when you use your personal referral code. Check out the details.
  • Host a virtual blood drive. Easy online setup and no venue required.
  • Consider a financial donation
  • Volunteer. Are you looking for a way to help in between blood donations? There are several opportunities to volunteer your time.
  • If you still have questions, there is a lot of great information on our website, vitalant.org. Or feel free to email or call us. Thank you for saving lives through blood donation.

Because of you, life doesn't stop.
