At 21, Sarah Ortiz was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. She underwent a difficult chemotherapy protocol that took a toll on her body. Blood and platelet transfusions helped her eventually beat cancer. "I was nervous at first to receive a blood transfusion, but by the time I was done, I had color in my cheeks, my gums turned pink, and I had energy, so much so, I became chatty and vibrant,” Sarah said. “Each time I received blood, I felt like a new person again.”
Every day, patients needing trauma care, cancer treatments, surgeries, and managing chronic illnesses rely on a consistent supply of blood. All blood types are essential, particularly type O, and platelet donors. Type O blood can support patients of any blood type, while platelets are crucial for stopping bleeding and must be used within one week of donation.
